What is the LD Liposomal Delivery™ Difference?
Liposomal delivery, or "LD" for short is a proprietary protective and delivery system for bovine colostrum supplements. In a nutshell, the LD Difference means that the colostrum bioactives remain biologically active at the cellular level with maximal effectiveness. Although bovine colostrum is minimally processed, it must be pasteurized, defatted, and dried; this process fractures the delicate, natural phospholipid* membrane that surrounds the colostrum. The goal standard is to then reapply the phospholipids to the colostrum, thereby restoring powdered colostrum to a state that is as close to raw, fresh colostrum as possible. Like fresh colostrum, colostrum with liposomal delivery remains intact (undigested) as it passes through the stomach on its way to the rest of the gastrointestinal tract (small and large intestines).
Studies have shown that colostrum without liposomal delivery tends to clump together in the gastrointestinal tract, while colostrum with liposomal delivery readily disperses for maximum absorption and effectiveness. Furthermore, digestion research comparing colostrum without liposomal delivery to colostrum with liposomal delivery shows that the LD offers nearly a 50% protection to immunoglobulin G (IgG) in the colostrum from being broken down by digestive enzymes in the stomach.
In addition to protecting colostrum, phospholipids in their own right have important physiological functions. All the body's cells are protected by a cell membrane comprised of the same phospholipids found in LD. They help maintain the health, integrity, and function of the cell membrane by providing a hospitable environment in which important membrane proteins 'float.' Disruptions and/or unfavorable phospholipid ratios have been linked to cell signaling errors.
When bovine colostrum is properly processed and liposomal delivery is utilized, the resulting supplement has these features:
- does not oxidize during storage (LD provides shelf-life)
- is protected against the digestive action of stomach acids and enzymes
- rapidly disperses within the G.I. tract
- delivers immune and growth factors directly to and into target cells
Sovereign Laboratories was the first supplement manufacturer to utilize liposomal delivery technology on a nutritional supplement.
Colostrum-LD® is sold exclusively by Sovereign Laboratories.
*Phospholipids are a class of lipids that are a major component of all cell membranes. They can form lipid bilayers because of their amphiphilic characteristic. The structure of the phospholipid molecule generally consists of two hydrophobic fatty acid "tails" and a hydrophilic "head" consisting of a phosphate group. The two components are joined together by a glycerol molecule. The phosphate groups can be modified with simple organic molecules such as choline, ethanolamine or serine. (Wikipedia)
